Elam Jewett Comings was born on April 22, 1812 in Berkshire, Vermont, to Andrew and Betsey (Jewett) Comings. He attended the Kimball Union Academy, and the University of Vermont (1834-36), graduating from Oberlin College ("Oberlin Collegiate Institute" before 1850) in 1838. In 1839, he married Fanny Woodbury Fletcher (d. 1894; enr. Oberlin 1833-35). They had two children, Sarah (1840-1926) and Eliza. Following his gradation from Oberlin Theological Seminary in 1841, Comings was ordained to the Congregational ministry. He held pastorates in Ohio, Vermont, and Massachusetts. From 1863-64, he and his daughter, Sarah, served in the Freedmen's Bureau at Beaufort, North Carolina under the auspices of the American Missionary Association. From 1874 until his death on November 23, 1894, Comings lived in Kingsville, Ohio, and preached to several neighboring parishes. Author: W. E. Bigglestone
