Scope and Contents: The Robert E. Neil Papers are arranged in six series.
Series 1. Biographical holds limited materials regarding Neil: clippings, letters from his spouse (restricted), and personal photographs. The bulk comprises historical materials from and on Neil’s ancestors, the Zesigers-Baumgarten families dating from about 1783 to the late 19th century.
Series 2. Correspondence is relatively small, consisting of correspondence with Oberlin College personnel, professional contacts outside Oberlin, and publishers.
Series 3. Writings by Robert E. Neil holds manuscripts and publications dating from 1961 to 1984 (span). Both the writings and talks include topics from his specialty in mid-20th century German history, higher education, and Oberlin College issues.
Series 4. Talks and Papers comprises lectures and addresses at Oberlin and guest speaking events at other colleges, some of which formed the basis for his publications.
Series 5. Sound Recordings holds two reel-to-reel tapes that have not been played by Archives staff. The inscriptions on the containers indicate that one of them holds German-language recordings, and the other appears to be a lecture.
Series 6. Lecture Notes holds a sample of Neil’s notes for his lectures, from 1961-1965.
